Greening Licence

Lille has been incorporating trenches into public spaces to encourage residents to make the city greener (400 in 2017).

It loans out cultivation containers or allows people to plant around the bases of trees. Anyone who commits to setting up and maintaining a revegetation apparatus in a public space is granted the authorization to occupy the public domain.

The city offers a series of shared gardens — friendly, lively places integrated in the neighbourhood, which encourage cross-generational and cross-cultural interaction. They are experimental grounds for environmentally-friendly practices and contribute to maintaining urban biodiversity and the dissemination of knowledge.

The city provides tips via workshops, which enable it to reach a wide audience: individuals and groups, as well as novices and enthusiasts. Residents thus become the primary agents of greening the city.
