The Cité Saint-Maurice

In the 19th century, industrialisation attracted new populations to the Saint-Maurice neighbourhood. To meet to workers' housing needs, the Cité Saint-Maurice estate was built, with construction starting in 1854. Its architect was François Colpaert.
This housing estate had a very modern layout. To access it, residents passed through two neoclassical porches. In the courtyard, rows of houses and a block of flats surrounded a central lawn.
Rents here were reasonable for the time. But to be offered a home here, each future renter had to submit an application to a supervisory committee and agree to respect the internal regulations. For example, it was prohibited to keep animals or hang laundry from the windows …
Recently renovated, these buildings have retained their residential purpose today.

De cité Saint-Maurice
In de 19de eeuw trokken nieuwe bevolkingsgroepen naar de buitenwijk Saint-Maurice. Om aan de woningvraag van de arbeiders te voldoen, werd vanaf 1854 de cité Saint-Maurice gebouwd. De architect is François Colpaert.
Het ontwerp van de cité is zeer modern. Om er te komen, moet je door twee poorten in neoklassieke stijl. Op de binnenplaats staan de rijtjeshuizen met een gebouw rondom een grasperk.
De huren waren redelijk voor die tijd. Maar om toegelaten te worden, diende elke toekomstige huurder zich kandidaat te stellen bij een commissie van toezicht en zich aan de huisregels te houden. Zo was het bijvoorbeeld verboden om dieren te fokken of de was aan het raam te hangen.
De cité, die onlangs gerenoveerd is, is nog steeds een woonwijk.
